Deb Broberg, executive director of RealTime Talent, will speak on a panel about the tech width=labor gap in Minnesota at TechTalent Feb. 28. The “Defining the Problem” panel will include insight on the current landscape and projections for what our technology talent gap will look like in 2022. Here’s a preview of some of her insight:

What’s the best thing about working in technology in Minnesota?

Tech opportunities exist in all industries. Whether that’s agriculture, healthcare, manufacturing, construction or business, technology skills are fundamental to running any business. Minnesota has a wide variety of businesses of all sizes that are seeking qualified workers.

What’s the hardest challenge facing our high-tech businesses?

The rapid pace of change requires rethinking how we educate people. Lifelong learning and an openness to retrain, reskill, and reimagine HR processes/policies will be essential to find and retain talent. In particular, cyber security is an area of great risk for all industries. Competing for talent in this area is a very real challenge for employers.

What will we learn from you at TechTalent?

I’ll speak about the depth of the worker shortage across all industries and how the changing economy is affecting Minnesota. Technology forecasts for gaps in supply and demand, along with current approaches will set the stage for further discussion about available talent and how to build a bigger pipeline of qualified workers. We’ll look at both demographics and immigration.

Which other speaker are you most excited to hear from?

The rapid-fire segment from various solution providers should be fun and informative!  Many creative, viable solutions are being defined and having great results producing qualified people more quickly.

What are you reading?

Educated, by Tara Westover. It was selected by my book club and it’s one I couldn’t put down for so many reasons. It really reinforces the need to remove barriers that keep folks from accessing education.

How are you staying active this winter?

Skiing –  I love both downhill and cross country!

What’s your favorite Minnesota taproom?

12welve Eyes Brewing is very good!
