Cologix opens 3rd data center in Minneapolis

March 4, 2015

MTHA – Cologix, a network neutral interconnection and data center company, announced the first phase of its Minneapolis 28K SQF “MIN3” data center, has successfully passed a rigorous commissioning test and is ready for service. The facility is located in downtown inside the 511 11th Avenue carrier hotel.

Cologix’s MIN3 data center is a unique enterprise-grade facility, strategically located downtown, with direct access to more network service providers via Cologix’s Meet-Me-Room than any other data center in the Upper Midwest. The facility is in the process of receiving Tier III certification by the Uptime Institute and is already approved for the State of Minnesota’s sales tax incentive program, whereby customers deploying qualifying new equipment or software in the data center are eligible for a sales tax rebate on those purchases. The site operates under the same controls that have already been certified under SOC2 Type2 (SSAE16) standards.

“The enterprises we talk to that are evaluating moving to a colocation model are looking for three things: 1) high reliability infrastructure, 2) proximity to their IT staff, and 3) the ability to future proof their investment with access to numerous network and cloud services with zero switching costs,” explains Grant van Rooyen, chief executive officer, Cologix. “Our new data center’s reliability stands up to any in the market. We built it downtown because it is minutes from anywhere in the metro area and because we can allay our customer’s concerns over technology change by connecting them to the largest network and cloud ecosystem in the region already established at the 511 11th building.”

Phase I of the new data center supports more than 250 cabinet equivalents. The site is supported by 2N UPS and generator infrastructure as well as N+1 cooling infrastructure, which has additional flexibility added into the design to accommodate high density applications. The second phase is prepped and available for rapid construction leveraging the base infrastructure in Phase I.

“Parallel Technologies was the design-build partner for this data center, including mechanical, electrical, network, cabling, physical security, and monitoring, and can attest to the impressive quality of the integrated design and construction of this new Cologix data center,” said Dale Klein, CEO of Parallel Technologies. “No detail was too small, and I can confidently say Cologix’s new build is the highest quality data center with unprecedented network service diversity.”

MIN3 is Cologix’s twenty-first data center in its North American platform, spanning in total more than 500K SQF. Minneapolis is the 16th largest market in the United States and home to more Fortune 500 companies per capita than any other market in the country. Following national trends, local enterprises are increasingly turning to colocation rather than rebuilding internal data centers as they reach end of life. In addition, the city has long been a network aggregation point for the Upper Midwest and an increasingly attractive alternative to Chicago for network and server deployments. Minneapolis is a textbook example of content and cloud providers serving traffic closer to the Internet’s New Edge, supported by the Midwest Internet Cooperative Exchange (MICE), which has experienced 14x growth in the past year, far outpacing general Internet traffic growth.
